March 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

presents, “Genetics in the Racial Imagination”

Hosted by:  Dr. Brett Maricque
In-person only:  Connor Auditorium (FLTC)

Talk abstract: How does genetics figure in everyday Americans’ beliefs about racial difference? Drawing on interviews with college students, textbook lessons, and public controversies over racial identity, I trace the ways in which many Americans link race to biological variation. And I briefly take up the counterpoint question—how does race figure in genetics?—by concluding with a discussion of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s forthcoming report on the uses of race in genomic research.
