The genetics department faculty take the lead in various outreach programs to enhance the migration of talented, STEM-focused, minoritized students into college STEM majors. We partner with the McDonnell Genome Institute’s Outreach department to administrate these programs to carry out educational effort in our community.

The Young Scientist Program is designed to attract students into scientific careers through activities emphasizing hands-on research and individualized contact between young people and active scientists.

MGI Outreach Group
The McDonnell Genome Institute (MGI) is tightly associated with the Genetics Department and the MGI Outreach group was established in 2003 in response to the National Human Genome Research Institute’s (NHGRI) Minority Action Plan (MAP).
The Outreach department reaches out to the St. Louis community in various ways, including:
- Visiting local schools to provide hands-on science activities to K-12 students
- Providing free tutoring to high school students
- Community discussions and programs
