History and Current Developments in Computational Biology
The Department of Genetics presents the Stormo Symposium on Computational Biology! This event celebrates Dr. Gary Stormo and his achievements as a pioneer in computational biology, as well as his legacy as an inspiring mentor and educator. His colleagues, collaborators, and former trainees will speak on Dr. Stormo’s accomplishments in computational biology, current developments in the field, and on the history of the Computational Biology Ph.D. program at Washington University in St. Louis.

About Dr. Gary Stormo
Dr. Gary Stormo is currently the Joseph Erlanger Professor in the Department of Genetics and the Center for Genome Sciences and Systems Biology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. As a pioneer in the field of computational biology, bioinformatics and genomics, Dr. Stormo established the Computational Biology Program (now called the Computational and Systems Biology Program) in the year of 2001, which was then one of the first computational biology PhD programs in the world. This program has trained over 140 PhD and MD/PhD students and propelled the advancement of the field of computational biology. Dr. Stormo was the mentor of many students and scientists including Drs. Ting Wang, Takis Benos, and Jin Billy Li. He served on the board of directors of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) from 2000 to 2004 and was honored as an ISCB Fellow in 2010.
